It's amazing how much the river current varies from turn to turn. I  started paddling like hell to get close to 5 mph and avoid a thunderstorm.  I did avoid the storm and was eventually able to get over 6 mph. After lunch I hit a current slowdown and my overall speed dropped to 5.9 mph.  We ended up skipping the International piers and putting in at the LA Hache ferry. This part of the river has very few locations where one can get off the river.
